Jenn Poeppelmeier who is with Governmental Affairs for Southwest Airlines visited the Rotary Club to talk about the power of a team.  She has been in her position for about three years and considered herself something of a political junkie before that in a consulting firm.
Ron Ricks, Executive VP of Southwest, engaged Ms. Poeppelmeier’s consulting firm to represent Southwest in the Kansas City center.  Southwest’s core purpose is to work every day to keep up the fight to comply with regulations, to deliver safe, affordable service and to take care of each other.  They intend to out-serve, out-smart and out-hustle their competitors to achieve their goals and follow their core purpose.
After working on Southwest projects Ms. Poeppelmeier was hired by them for the Governmental Affairs department.  It is active in Washington, D.C. working on industry affairs.  Through their efforts they increased support for their interests by one hundred percent making their work very important to the company.
Part of the reason they have been successful is that they hire the people they want and train them in a skill; they do not hire a skill and try to modify the person.  Ms. Poeppelmeier says, “Experience is what you get when you expect something else.”  They have been very successful in their market and in their company following this team building plan.
