Pete Havel, President of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce for about eight months, visited the Rotary Club to talk about some of his new ideas for the Chamber. Pete, in his words replaced a legend in Debra Wakeland and he is still learning.

Pete brings broad experience with advancing the cause of free enterprise, empowering businesses and possesses a deep knowledge of the legislative and political processes. He is turning that experience into developing some new programs and events for Waxahachie.

The Chamber wants to be a driver of economic development working with the city office of economic development. As businesses open here employment rises, there are more goods and services available and sales taxes rise. The city gets a portion of those increased taxes to use on its programs and projects.

They intend to be problem solvers for the business community when it is facing issues and an advocate at the local, state and federal levels. They are not yet involved in tax reform and health care issues but they will come. As these issues face business they will help balance employee benefits with government requirements and costs.

The Chamber will continue to be a source of information with events such as the lunch with Congressman Joe Barton and special meetings and events of interest to the business community. They will be providing tools for small businesses with the web page, newsletter and the upcomming Ellis County Expo and Spring Market.

In addition they plan to act as a connector providing information on the needs of non-profit organizations to businesses which would want to help.
