Waxahachie High Student of the Month for September

In last week’s Rotary meeting, Rotarian Dan Lobb had the pleasure of introducing Waxahachie High School principal, Dr. Al Benskin, as a special guest.  Each month Rotary honors an outstanding student from each of our public high schools as Student of the Month.  Dr. Benskin had the honor of awarding the WHS Student of the Month Award for September to Destiny Josephine Kathleen “Kat” Owens.

Kat is the daughter of Randy and Liz Owens.  She has been involved in Student Council for all four years of high school and was elected Senior Class Secretary.  Kat invests much of her time with the other officers planning and working so that the year goes smoothly and is fun for all students.
She is fluent in Spanish due to five years of Spanish classes in school and travelling to Spain with the Culture Club in her junior year.  She has won first place at the Net Ole Spanish Speaking Competitions two years in a row with Advanced Spanish Spelling and was also inducted into the Spanish Honor Society last Spring.
Kat has participated in mission trips taking her all the way to Honduras and Mexico with Christian Relief Fund to minister to and help families.  She has been involved in the Interact Club participating in events such as Mums for Emily each year and Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat.  Her volunteer work and grades are the reasons for her involvement in the National Honor Society this year.
She ran cross country on Varsity her freshman through junior years and was elected captain her junior year.  She has been in Musical Theater all four years, Jazz Choir, Advanced Ladies Choir and Advanced Theater.  She played the role of Jane, Wendy’s daughter in “Peter Pan”.
She plans to attend Texas State University in the Fall to study and work toward her Master’s Degree in social work and Spanish.
It is an honor for Rotary to acknowledge such a outstanding student as Kat Owens.  A plaque with her name engraved on it will hang in the halls of Waxahachie High School for many years to come.
