Every year our Rotary District Governor visits each of the 62 local clubs in our district which stretches from Waxahachie to the Red River and from Dallas to Wylie.  This week the Rotary Club of Waxahachie was honored to host Governor Larry Webb and his spouse, Pam.

He brought Rotary International’s 2015-16 theme, “Be a Gift to the World”, and explained some of the ways the local Rotarians should be a gift.  He challenged us to look everywhere to make a difference – at home, in our city and state and around the world.

One of the ways Rotarians make a difference is the Polio Plus program to erradicate the polio virus from the world.  The only countries with cases now are Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.  By the end of July Nigeria, Somalia and the Cameroon will have been polio-free for one year meaning that the World Health Organization considers the virus to have been eliminated from them.  This will leave only Afghanistan and Pakistan with their political and religious constraints.  As the ads go, “We Are This Close” to eradicating it from the world.

Governor Webb noted that even when an illness seems to be eliminated from an area if children are not vaccinated they are at risk and place others at risk.  The recent measles outbreak in California is a good example.

Traditionally the DG’s spouse takes a project and Pam Webb’s is aid to agencies that are working to eliminate human trafficking.  Texas is the third worst state for this problem and she wants to break the cycle.  This will entail understanding the problem and assisting the agencies which are working on it.  The club made a donation to this project and donations from those interested in eliminating human trafficking are welcome.

Mr Webb encouraged all of the members to take care of their families by having regular checkups and otherwise caring for themselves so they will still be around for their children and grandchildren.  This is one way we can “Be a Gift”.
