MeLissa Boler of Bridges Training Foundation visited the Rotary Club to explain how her organization helps people in our community.  She says that those with some form of disability form ten percent of our total population.  Often thesepeople don’t get out very well and are underrepresented in our day to day experience.
Bridges helps people with health impairments such as seizures or Parkinson’s disease, autism, lower IQ and Veterans with similar problems.  In addition to the training they give, sometimes these folks just need to have a place to go.
There are three levels of service provided:
  • Vocational/Socialization to work with clients and employers so that the client can be a productive member of society.
  • A day program for those with lower IQ’s.Communicating and teaching basic skills.
  • Constant care which will be implemented later this year.
The best thing that people can do to help is to talk to the people; get to know them.  If you are an employer contact Bridges to see if you might have a position for someone.  You could share at the day program teaching or playing cards.  Also, if you know someone with this type of disability you could refer them to Bridges.
