Only about sixteen percent of the people who make new year’s resolutions actually keep them.  That may surprise you because you thought nobody kept them.  Certainly you don’t know any of these people.  At the end of 2016 they will have moved on with their lives but you will still be just where you were.  Who are these super people?

Rotarian Dave McSpadden spoke to the Rotarians about making 2016 their best year ever.  There is a clear reason that we can keep our resolutions or not and it lies in our makeup as humans.

Mr. McSpadden reminded us that we are a very blessed species.  We have the opposed thumbs, a nervous system that is aware of itself and, most important for his presentation, we have the power of choice.  We can choose to do one thing or another.  We can make bad choices or good choices. Everything we do actually reflects the choices we make.

One of those choices is whether or not to keep our new year’s resolutions.  If you have stopped going to the gym it is because you choose not to.  It’s not that you are too busy or too stressed; it is because you chose something else.  If you intended going to the gym to get back in shape, that won’t happen.  At the end of the year you still will not have improved.

The problem is probably that you are too busy or too stressed to take the time.  You have the ability to change that.  Take the power of choice to decide your future.  Learn to manage stress.  Learn to say, “No”. The world really does not revolve around you and if you say no it will still go round.  You have to be able to live your life with as little stress as possible.  Make changes so you can go back and revive that resolution.  You will be better for it.
