Holly Browning, Community Liaison & Family Programming Coordinator for the Nicholas P. Sims Library and Lyceum, visited the Rotary Club to explain all of the opportunities and services available at the facility.

Mr. Sims was an early pioneer in this area who left the bulk of his estate for the establishment of the facility.  It was one of the first ten public libraries in Texas when it was constructed in 1902-04.  It was a modern operation then and it remains high tech today.  It is a private non-profit agency which is also supported by the city of Waxahachie.

The purpose of a library is access to information.  That access today at Sims Library can be achieved through the internet, story time, family movie night, teen advisory board, chess club, genealogy help, ToastMasters, writing, computer classes and many, many more ways.  Yes, they still have books you can check out or read there.

There are over 90,000 items in print, 3,000 eBooks, 6,000 titles on audio format and over 4,000 videos.  In addition there is access to fifty-eight databases on the computers available there.  Last year there were three hundred free programs presented to nearly 7,000 people.  There were 250,000 visits to the library so the facility is well used.

How might you take advantage of and use the services available to you?  Get a library card and use it.  Come to programs. Donate and buy books.  Join the Friends of Sims. Volunteer.  Sponsor projects, programs and activities then tell others about the greatness you have found.

Research indicates children whose parents read to them have better social skills, reasoning skills and problem-solving skills.  Children in families which read together are academically advanced by at least one grade level.
