The Baylor Scott & White Medical Center opened in Waxahachie a year ago this week.  Following extensive training all of the patients and personel were moved quickly and comfortably on a beautiful Saturday.

Possibly most exciting for the community is that in this year they have delivered 500 babies.  Mothers-to-be no longer have to go to Mansfield or Dallas for a safe, secure delivery.  Last December the first baby’s name was Noah – for rebirth.  The latest baby on November 25 is Grace.  A fitting ending to an exceptional year.

Mr. York explained that they have implemented “Lean Management Systems”.  Every day all of the 1,000 staff and doctors ask themselves what they can do to be better.  Suggestions can be followed immediately improving the patient experience. They want to get it right every day for every patient.

There are many numerical measures of quality and efficiency and our local center exceeds the results of all other Baylor medical centers.  In addition The Joint Commission, a federal hospital auditing organization, recently gave our center the highest survey results in the history of Baylor Scott & White.  The team strives to be as close as possible to perfection.  If everyone on the staff is allowed to live out his or her ministry and calling, excellent results and a motivated staff will result.

The mortgage on the facility is $1.5 million each month.  In spite of this the hospital operates at a five percent profit margin.  Since they are a not-profit these funds are used to hire new staff and develop new programs.

Mr. York listed a full page of new programs that are in the plans including a trauma center, expanded cancer center, gastroenterologist, colon/rectal surgery, inpatient dialysis and spine surgery.  One of the largest problems facing Waxahachie medical care has been the lack of effective physician recruitment.  This is being addressed and it is expected that the ratio of physicians to residents will be improved substantially.
