Chris York, president of Baylor, Scott & White Medical Center of Waxahachie brought the club up to date on the status and plans for our hospital.

Things continue to move very quickly for the hospital. The present facility has about reached practical capacity so expansions are planned. After twenty months of operation they have outgrown the first phase. First, the sixth floor will be built out then plans begun for a new bed tower. The sixth floor will contain 25 beds, a dialysis center and more. A new doctors’ office building is under construction.

New services being planned include achieving trauma designation and stroke designation. A new trauma operating room and two other operating rooms are planned.

Some statistics for the Waxahachie medical center: It is it best performing hospital in the BS&W system. They have the third busiest emergency room in the system. Patients now come from Arlington to Corsicana to Waco bypassing local hospitals for the care received here. Number of admissions is way up; average length of stay is way down and readmissions are at an all-time low. The goal is to be among the best in the U.S.

The 774 employees receive $25 million in salaries, much of which is spent locally. In addition many people stay in motels here while visiting patients. This is also a benefit to the community. It has also become easier to get physicians to move and practice here.

Code Silver! This alert means an armed person is on the campus. When this happened a few weeks ago the Baylor police officer talked the armed man into letting a nurse take his two children. She also cleared the waiting room where he was acting as a threat. Waxahachie police and Baylor staff brought the situation to a peaceful end because of the professionalism of everyone.

All Baylor people are taught to care for and love everyone they come in contact with. This includes coworkers as well as patients and families. This is one of the reasons this hospital is rated so highly in customer satisfaction.
